International Solar Energy Experts (I-SEE) Workshop - Upcoming

As part of its knowledge networking activities, The Energy Center (TEC) is hosting an International Solar Energy Experts (I-SEE) Workshop from 2 – 4 August 2011, at the College of Engineering, KNUST Ghana. The event is being organized within the framework of the Solar Capacity Upgrading Project (SolarCUP), which is implemented by TEC and its partner in the Renewable Energy Education Project (REEP), the international Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering (2iE), based in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. SolarCUP is supported by the World Bank under the Clean Energy Investment Framework Multi Donor Trust Fund.

I-SEE is expected to bring together solar energy experts, including researchers, policy makers, technology and project developers and businesses, to create a dynamic network of experts across the West African Sub-region and Africa as a whole, a network that continually shares knowledge and experiences for the advancement of solar energy technology in Africa.

In a departure from the traditional approach of donor-initiated, and donor-driven small and isolated solar energy projects, I-SEE will deliberate on ways of getting the ECOWAS sub-region to tap into its significant solar energy potential (a daily GHI of up to 7 kwh/m2) to deploy utility-scale solar energy systems that are supported by innovative and sustainable financing mechanisms.

Confirmed participants include:
•    Dr Hussein Elhag, Executive Director, African Energy Commission (AFREC)
•    Mr Mahama Kappiah, Executive Secretary of the ECOWAS Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE)
•    Mr Amadou Diallo, Executive Director, West African Power Pool (WAPP)
•    Dr Yao Azoumah, Head, Solar Energy and Energy Saving Laboratory (SEESL), 2iE, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
