TEC Fellows Take Part in Biogas Laboratory Training

The Energy Center, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology as part of the technical cooperation for Climate and Resource Protection in Ghana between University of Applied Science in Gelsenkirchen (WH), Technical University, Dortmund (TU Dortmund) offered fellowship to Mr. Kofi Owusu Ansah Amano and Dr. Lawrence Darkwah, both of the Department of Chemical Engineering, to attend a 2-week training on Utilisation of Specific Biogas Laboratory Equipment at the University of Applied Sciences. The training was under the leadership of Prof. Winfried Schmidt

This cooperation is managed by Deutsche Gesellschaft Internationale Zusammenartbeit (GIZ) with financial support from Federal Government of North Rhine Westphalia (NRW).

The main aim of this initiative was to share expertise between WH and KNUST staff to be able to run and maintain a biogas laboratory being installed for teaching and research purposes on KNUST campus in Kumasi.

The training was mainly to have practical knowledge of how to use BlueSens Yield Master which is already being used by the host institution (WH) in determining the biogas and methane produced by a specific substrate(s). Other experiments covered usage of OxyTop to determine the volume of gas produced by types of feedstock as well as carrying out determination of other needful and essential parameters of feedstock.

This training was important and useful in the strengthening of support in augmenting capacity building in this specific discipline of engineering practice of converting waste and redundant resources to energy.
